Horticulture Career Start Program

What you’ll be doing

The career start program is a 12-month opportunity where you will experience working within horticulture. You’ll spend the first 6 months in the post-harvest department and then the remaining 6 months on an orchard. You’ll also spend time meeting and learning from people across our business including the business support services departments.

While in Post Harvest – You’ll work as a Site Administrator at one of the Hasting’s coolstores.  You will manage inventory and data accurately and in a timely manner. You’ll assist the site manager and other staff to ensure smooth operations across the site as well as meeting our compliance, and health and safety standards.

While on Orchard – You’ll work at a dedicated orchard as an Orchardist. After harvest our orchards are busy preparing for the coming season and you’ll work across a variety of tasks including; pruning, thinning, tractor work, tree planting, trapping/counting monitoring and pollination. You will also get exposure to crop forecasting, workforce planning, development of spray programs and the technology that supports this work.

What you’ll bring

• Passion – you are keen to learn and explore a career within horticulture
• Completed a minimum of a Diploma or bachelor's degree in 2024 in a subject relevant to our horticulture
• Strong communication skills, comfortable working in a team and autonomously
• High attention to detail and eye for quality  
• You are willing to work both indoors and outdoors
• Own accommodation and transport (minimum of restricted licence) in Hawke’s Bay
• You have the right to work in New Zealand and are available for the full 12-month contract
